Algorithm (or lack thereof)

JoeBrewing

One of the first things I do when I join a new to me platform is try to figure out the algorithm. It's the thing that's going to feed my content to other people. I need to keep it happy right?

I'm sure you've already figured this out based on the fact that...well...you're here, but I recently started blogging. There doesn't really seem to be an algorithm around blogging. Beyond that...there doesn't really seem to be a central place to go to find a list of blogs. At least as far as I know there doesn't seem to be one.

I just made a Threads post about that. I'm probably missing the obvious. A simple google search didn't really help me find anything though.

On any other social media platform I would be posting, seeing what kind of posts are seen the most, what kind of posts get on other people's feeds the most, and altering my strategy based on that. With Threads I've determined that the scattershot approach seems to work the best. The more you post, the more you reply...the more your content seems to be placed in front of other people.

I'm assuming I can take a similar approach to blogging as I do to engaging on Threads. The way I would more than likely do that would be to find blogs that I like to read and interact in their comments. That's really the only way I can think to do it. It's kind of similar to the practice of watching the YouTube videos of other creators and leaving a message in their comments with something that you liked about the video.

There's a blogging subreddit. I'm going to end up checking that out as well. This is a whole new world to me. So the more I can read about how other people approach things, and the more I can see their mindset on things...the better chance I'll have of figuring out the right way to approach this. As I was writing this someone also mentioned on Threads something called Substack. So I guess I'm going to be checking that out as well.

I don't really know what I'm doing on here yet. Largely I feel like I'm mostly just talking into the void and hoping that at some point people will start reading it. I feel like it's probably that way with most social media platforms. I am starting to get more traction on Threads, but there's still a ton of times where it feels like I'm just completely, 100%, screaming into the void.

So in terms of blogging there doesn't really appear to be one unifying algorithm. I think that's ok. Twitch doesn't really have one unifying way to grow either. I guess in one way Twitch is a lot like blogging. I know that sounds weird, but hear me out. On Twitch you go live as much as you possibly can and you hope that people will find you. Realistically you're going to have to find other ways to get yourself out there for people to find your stream though.

Blogging is basically the same. You write your blogs. You do the best you can to optimize your SEO in the hopes that people will find it on their own. Or...like me...you do absolutely nothing with SEO because you know nothing about it, and it scares you. Like Twitch though...you have to find ways to put yourself out there for people to be able to find your blog.

That's something I've been doing a lot of this year. I've been putting myself out there. I've been putting myself out there trying to find a job. I've been putting myself out there trying to find friends. I've been putting myself out there trying to find other streamers to collaborate with. I really like collaborating with other streamers by the way. It's much more fun to stream when I have people I'm communicating with and springboard of what they're saying. I've been putting myself out there as a streamer.

Now...I'm putting myself out there as a blogger.
